Face oil is the king among all my care products. I use oils in home care almost every day, especially in the cold season, when the skin loses its natural lipid protection with tripled strength. And this can happen with any type of skin - normal, dry and even oily or combination - like mine. I heard a lot from ordinary people and even from professional cosmetologists that the oils are too heavy for the skin, it can clog pores, under the oil "the skin does not breathe," etc. In my opinion they either choose the wrong oils or use them incorrectly. Therefore, I will tell about my experience and share my own rating of the best facial oils, for many of which I have already written separate reviews on my blog. There is too much information on the Internet, invented by someone who, it seems, never had normal oil in their hands, not just once putting it on their faces.
Oils for the beauty of the face, hair and body have been used since ancient times, this is, so to speak, the basis of modern cosmetology. Remember the composition of any cream - almost always there you will see a whole list of various oils that are necessarily present in creams and serums. In the processed state, but still ... Oils are extremely beneficial for the beauty of the skin, because contain lipids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, minerals, vitamins A, B, C, D, E, F and even phytoestrogens that rejuvenate the skin and fight wrinkles.
In order not to interfere with everything in a heap and so that from the very beginning you can figure out what kind of oil to lubricate your face, let me remind you the main thing you need to know about oils - all oils are divided into two types - base and essential:
Base oils
Base oils are fatty or vegetable oils that are extracted from oil plants or their oil parts - most often we are talking about their fruits, grains and seeds. The most famous representatives of the category are grape seed oil, wheat germ oil, olive oil, apricot kernel oil, castor oil, black cumin oil, coconut oil, argan oil, shea butter, etc. Those that tend to harden at temperatures below + 30 ° C (coconut oil, cocoa butter or shea butter) are also called solid oils or butter. Base oils can be used in their pure form, choosing the right for the skin type and problems it has. For the face, you should choose only high-quality oils of the first cold pressure.
Essential oils
Essential oils are active oils, they are extracted from "aromatic" plants by distillation - essential oils of lavender, orange, neroli, rose, tea tree, etc. Essential oils should never be applied to the face in its pure form. This can lead to burns and allergic skin reactions. Therefore, if you see somewhere on the Internet or on the forum the rating of oils in which both base and essential oils are listed at the same time, feel free to pass by, because they will not tell you the truth. If the author is confused even in the basics of oil use, because these are ABSOLUTELY different categories and they cannot be compared at the same level under any circumstances!
Do not blindly trust the labels and buy the first oil that comes across or run into the kitchen and pour vegetable oil from a bottle on your face. You won't see the benefits of this. But the harm from oil from the kitchen on your face can be felt in full. Therefore, for starters, you generally need to deal with the needs of your skin. Improperly selected or used oil can only worsen the condition of the skin - dry it out, cause inflammation or cause allergic reactions. Even the most natural oils are not at all as harmless as we would like to think about them.
Well, there are a couple of rules that you should immediately have in mind, if you decide to experience the magical power of natures oils: Immediately “NO” to oils, in the composition of which the chemical components are directly indicated - parabens, silicones, mineral oil (the question is what are the manufacturers who are “lazy” to write this information at all.) The second “NO” can be said to cheap oils of unknown origin. There are no miracles. The desire to save is understandable, but believe me, quality really costs money. And valuable oils are valuable for that, so that high-quality raw materials and the correct process of their production cost some money. I’m not discovering anything new here. I have already tested this on my own experience, and you can see, if you wish, the benefit is that cheap oils are really cheap and easily available. Just do not immediately draw conclusions after experimenting with pharmacy oils . In my case, from the pharmacy kit, perhaps only sea buckthorn worked out at 100%. And the rest, those oils are like smearing clay. In my opinion, the best way to save on this issue is not to save on quality, but to buy cosmetics and oils in reliable, trusted stores during various promotions and sales. Fortunately, they happen quite often and thus you can always find good oil for any wallet.
Which oil is suitable for what skin - useful properties of cosmetic oils
When choosing oil for the face, one should watch both its origin and the reputation of the manufacturer, and most importantly, take into account that each oil has a specific composition and properties that are not suitable for everyone. I’ll give a short list with a specialization of BASIC base oils, which are most often used in cosmetology: For dry and dehydrated skin - avocado oil, argan oil, olive oil, rose oil, for dry skin the butters like coconut oil, shea butter, which are not recommended for other skin types, may be suitable.
With oily and inflamed skin - black cumin oil, St. John's wort oil, grape seed oil. Universal oils that are suitable for all skin types - apricot kernel oil, tallow oil, wheat germ oil, sea buckthorn oil.
The best anti-wrinkle facial oils are rose oil and wheat germ oil. Any listed oils are suitable for facial massage, because the main thing that is required of them is an improved sliding of the hands, and any oil is capable of this. Even, God forgive me, mineral oil can perform this function.
How to use face oil
I describe from my own experience, based on my own feelings and the results of many years of use of oils in care. My skin is mixed, but sensitive and prone to hyperpigmentation. In summer, it is more oily with pores in the T-zone and a tendency to single inflammations, in winter there can be dryness and tightness. So, correctly apply oil to the face: 1) As already indicated above, you need to choose exclusively natural oils and preferably with a complex combined composition of different VALUABLE oils, and if you go as part of demyticones (silicones), parabens, mineral oil, etc. chemistry ! In this case, the oil is perfectly stored and without chemistry. 2) Avoid if possible “heavy oils” about face care, such as coconut oil or shea butter, they are really quite heavy, absorb longer and can just “clog” the pores on the face, although I like them for the body. 3) Use the oil dosed, grind a couple of drops of oil between the palms and put them on the face - I have enough of this oiling under the eye! So, then you won’t have to remove excess oil from the face and there will be no swelling in the morning (even if you are prone to them and apply oil to the skin around the eyes). 4) Combine oils with serums and / or face creams. For me, this is a win-win combo that works much better than just face creams and even many masks. So you can 100% eliminate the increase in dry skin after applying oils, because it’s not for nothing that cosmetologists insist - oils are 100% fat, and our skin has water even more important. Do not forget to not only “nourish” the skin, but also “to drink”. My main scheme for using facial oil in care is washing with foam, tonic, serum and then oil. Ideally, also hydrolyte, or a moisturizing spray, spray it all on top.
5) Facial massage with oil is perhaps the best thing you can do with your face at home. In this case I will not dwell in detail, one of the most effective in my case is a massage with applicators
6) How often to use face oil? For me, first of all, oil is an evening ritual of beauty. Firstly, in the evening is a bit more for myself, when I not only oil my face for the night, but I can also do a 5-minute massage. But it can not only be applied to the face at night, oil can be used in the morning, applying as a base under makeup. When the skin dries and tightens quickly, I use oils in day care (according to the same scheme, applying a couple of drops on top of serum and / or cream). This gives the skin extra protection and nourishment. Well, make-up, especially mineral makeup on oil, often go to better on oily base. Remember instagram bloggers who generously oil their face and apply makeup on top? Professional brands like Smashbox, Bobbi Brown, and Mac have already adopted this trend and released their own oil base for makeup. I personally tried only Smashbox and I can say it is not bad, but I do not see the difference between using a special oil base and those oils that I use. The main point here is not to overdo it and that you do not have an individual allergy to any components. You can’t spoil this porridge with oil. Remember how I said? Warm up a couple of drops on the palms and apply to the face. It seems to me that it is not worth it to pour from a pipette, as instloblogers do. 7) Well, and another rule of the oil is that it needs to be stored properly - always in a cool and dark place. If in the refrigerator, then only in the door. In glass bottles, oil retains its properties longer than in plastic. It is impossible to smear your face with expired oil with a characteristic rancid odor! Write it down directly to yourself.
But maybe I didn’t tell you everything and you also have your own secrets - how to use face oil? I would be glad if you share your experience in the comments.
